Cox, Gordon. “How ‘The Lion King’ Changed Broadway.” Variety, vol. 338, no. 2, 2017, p. 24.

Gordon discusses the musical’s great success and brings up the total earnings of the, “The lion king” accomplished with its successful transformation of Times Square and the environment surrounding the musical in NYC. He discusses disney’s decision and thought process to locate “The lion king” in new york city and establishes a connection between tourist and theatre goers with the health and culture of broadway in 42nd street. Gordon makes it very clear that this musical has developed a great culture in New york.

This is a great source, John discusses the changes lion king has developed and  made in times square in 42nd street a more touristic and family friendly location for all theater goers and tourists. John’s article is very informative and  helps the reader understand why “The lion king” is valuable and gives the reader an understanding of the racial influences this musical could have had in New York city. Johns is qualified to write and discuss this content because he is a content creator/ journalist who has been specializing in theater for over 20 years.

This piece of information can help me develop an understanding of its influences around the city or around the world. This piece of information can support how the lion king shaped nyc theater culture and how that links up with racial topics. I can also reference this article to help understand the reader’s major strong points of the musical.

Cerniglia, Ken, and Aubrey Lynch. “Embodying Animal, Racial, Theatrical, and Commercial Power in The Lion King.” Conference Proceedings (Congress on Research in Dance), vol. 2011, 2011, pp. 3–9., https://doi.org/10.1017/S0149767711000234.

Cernilia and Lynch both discuss the debut of “The lion king” and talk about the animals and humans that brought these creatures to life. They make a connection between racial empowerment between the animals and the humans. Disney’s unique use of body motion and movements are a powerful and ambassadorial function that make “The lion king” come to life. Both authors list the names of the collaborators that worked on this musical such as the lyricist and the score maker. The authors touch upon the racial power that this musical gives for a diverse audience

Although this source is secondary, “Embodying Animal, Racial, Theatrical, and Commercial Power in The Lion King” is a useful source because the articles theme focuses on racial discussions in the lion king and links up dancing and music including the lyrics with the empowerment of the people and animals that are on set that also empower a diverse audience. The author’s tone reflects a review of what the lion king succeeded in and what the musical was trying to communicate towards the audience. The author’s sources originate from Cambridge journals and Cambridge libraries. Ken Cergnilia is the literary manager for the Disney theatrical group. Aubrey Lynch was a collaborator that worked on the choreography for the lion king. Both authors have total authority with what they discussed.

This article directly discusses the theme I will be discussing in my essay, “the racial topics/ ideas in the lion king.” This article will be a perfect fit to analyze and grab information. Considering the authors collaborated with the lion king i can get a deeper insight of the meaning behind the geography and the musical score piece that the Lion king was trying to communicate.

John Eliton, Tim Rice, Rodgers Aller, Rine Minche, “The lion king junior” Lion King Script.pdf (beyondthe4thwall.com)

This is a musical score book and full script of the lion king. The 177 page book has dialogue from the original musical and showcases the music sheets that allows you to play along with the piano or any other musical instrument you desire to play. The beginning to end also has the lyrics to each song and harmonizes perfectly with the melody of the music sheets. The original lyricist and musical score producer are referenced in this book.

This is a great source to look at because it showcases the original content that can be looked at multiple times for review or for criticism. For the sake of this essay we will be reviewing and taking a deeper look into the musical score piece, lyrics and dialogue to conclude the influence this has on the racial ideas. Considering this is an original piece of the musical with music sheets by the original lyricist, musical score producer and writers, we can conclude that this is a primary source.

This book has total authority over content it has and can be used to strengthen my point of view over the lion king. This source was helpful because I was getting an authentic piece of information and I can use this source to discuss the lion king’s message to the audience and I can reference dialogue, discuss the musical score and the connection with the geography and the theme.

Bennett, Susan. “The Lion King: An International History: Susan Bennett: Taylor & Fr.” Taylor & Francis, Taylor & Francis, 16 Aug. 2019, https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/10.4324/9781315543703-54/lion-king-susan-bennett.

Susan formulates an idea and cites evidence on why the lion king was a successful hit. She explains the influence this musical had on an international level and how Disney’s decision to locate this musical altered how each country presents it. Susan further analyzes what were the reasons the lion king ultimately received a huge revenue from all over the world.

This is a great source for my claim, “how did the choreography, musical score or lyrics contribute to the success of the lion king’s debut. Susan’s idea harmonizes with my claim, she agrees that lion king is an amazing musical and she further explains the reason why which gives my claim more to rely on. Her tone in the article is very formal and optimistic towards the lion king. Susan bennet has authority over this content because she is a canadian professor of english in the faculty in humanities studies.

I do think this source is going to be very helpful because in comparison to my other sources this source discusses the lion king’s international influence and disney’s decisions on the musical that allowed it to become successful around the world. I will be talking about how the lion king became successful with these factors: musical score, lyrics and choreography. I can use this source in my project by referencing what susan explains that led to the success of the lion king on an international level.
